Makeup for the Soul: Reflections Organics Thoughts + Review

January 25, 2017 Perin Sidhu

I love discovering new brands -add organic and natural to the list. Over the years, I have started to pay more attention to the ingredients list of beauty products. The conscious effort in doing so has allowed me to save on products, which could have potentially caused my skin to flare up. This is the very reason why organic makeup brands capture my attention.

If I could list 3 reasons why you should consider trying organic beauty products, they would be the following:

  • Organic makeup products are formulated with skin-loving ingredients (e.g. minerals). Overtime, the products help to improve your skin (despite using them for the intended use of being makeup).
  • No harsh chemicals are used making it a great choice for sensitive skin.
  • Contrary to popular belief, organic beauty products do pack a punch in the pigmentation department and you should be able to find a variety of products these days

One such Organic beauty heaven I’ve come across recently is a local Singapore brand, Reflections Organics. I recall coming across their Instagram page (on the explore page) late last year and was impressed with the content they were putting out (love it when brands include a personal touch). The brand believes that  “beauty is from the inside out…. women should always see how truly beautiful and powerful they are, and not be subject to society’s definition of beauty.” – Now that is something I resonate with.

Many a times, we are categorized according to our looks. While that it often passed off as human nature, it should never define us. Hearing Reflections Organics founder, Nerissa Low share about her struggles with common beauty woes such as Acne, I felt as though much thought has been put into the products (with regards to its formulation) -and I was right. It did not take me much time to jump on board the organic makeup bandwagon since I am a big fan of organic skincare. I was invited to the brands’ recent launch party and had the opportunity to try/swatch/admire the products first-hand.

If you’re on my Instagram page, you would have seen sneak peeks via Instagram stories. Since then, I have been putting three of the brand’s products to use and here are my thoughts:

First up, let us talk about one of the many base products the brand carries – Reflections Organics Pressed Mineral Foundation.  Marketed as a mineral foundation, this product has been formulated with natural minerals and does not contain any pore-clogging ingredients. This is certainly a refreshing change in Singapore’s weather.

The packaging is rather fuss-free – a transparent box with the product showing through clearly. I particularly like how simple the packaging is. Coming to the product proper, the powder provides light-medium coverage and is definitely build-able especially when used with a sponge or buffing brush. As the products were given out at random during the event, this is definitely not the perfect shade as it is one – 1.5 shade lighter. However, I am still able to make it work by warming up my face with bronzer. I have used it both as a foundation and setting powder (placed over top my tinted moisturizer) and love the finish of both.

At the end of the 6-hour mark, I do find myself having to check if I need a touch up. A spritz of rose water/ Fix + or any makeup setting spray helps to revive the look and prolong the wear of the product. Overall, this is a great product for anyone wishing to complete their base routine under 2 minutes. To increase the level coverage, simply use it over a lightweight foundation. The scent of the product is reminiscent of chocolate cake batter.

Coming to the price point (yes I do agree that it is a little steep), if you are looking to splurge on a powder foundation, this would be it. The ingredients are friendly for the skin. Personally, I feel that you are getting twice the amount of powder in this product as compared to a drugstore powder. The math works out to be the same, just the investment comes earlier.

An eye shadow junkie like me can’t possible stay away from eye shadows for long. I am always looking out for unique shades. Amethyst is just that, at least in my collection. From cool and warm toned to glitter purples, you name it and they are in my collection. If there were a shade missing, it would be Amethyst. I just never considered such a shade. We are taking eggplant purple with a hint of grey. I am sure you would be able to find such a shade in many conventional palettes but I am glad to be having it in a loose pigment form.

Such a shade draws mystery to the eyes and I love using loose pigments in this case as it helps me to create a diffused look with much ease. The mineral eye shadows are much sheerer in pigmentation as compared to pressed shadows but provide a softer wash of color (perfect for everyday use). I have tried using Amethyst in my crease as well as an all over lid shade. Mixed with a kohl liner, I love how subtle the look is.  However it can be a mess to work with loose pigment. I would have liked for the product to contain a sifter but we all learn the hard way (I made a little of a mess initially).

A trick is to open the lid, turn the knob (i.e. holding the product together) and close the lid. Next, tilt the product over and tap it from the bottom. This allows minimal product to be dispensed and saves you the trouble of having to deal with product wastage. The little lid cover also serves as a mini palette holder.

Mineral eye shadows are great for beginners who are venturing into the world of eye shadows. If you are not a fan of purples, there are a ton of other color families to choose from on their website. I am planning to pick up their mineral sparkle shadows on my next order. I swatched them during the event and it blew my mind.

Home girl here loves her matte lip products and I have been staying away from glosses for the longest time. In 2016, this changed and I found myself reaching for more glosses – we are talking pigmented glosses. I began to love how they felt on the lips. The tacky after feel was there on the lips but it was nothing to major.

The Lip Glaze from Reflections Organics  (14 shades to choose from) is just that. The consistencies of these Lip Glazes remind me of the Colourpop Ultra Glossy formula, only a tad bit heavier. They glide on smoothly. They are not overly long lasting but they give you a good 2-3 hour of wear with light drinking/eating. Touching up is relatively easy and the product does not clump upon reapplication. Even after the 3-hour mark, the shade leaves behind a gorgeous non-glossy stain.

The shade I am featuring here is Peanut Butter. It is a beautiful nude for belles of all skin tones, especially medium onwards. It gives just the right amount of warmth (pink and brown hues) to your lips. Since its formulated using a rich blend of shea butter and coconut oil, it gives off the appearance of luscious and hydrated lips, as seen below.

Here’s a full look created using the 3 products reviewed above. I layered Amethyst all over my lids and especially buffed it into the crease along with a taupe shadow. This helped to create some depth. It sure is a beautiful shade!

I am always looking out for the best deals for my readers and if you’re interested in purchasing these products or anything from their site feel free to use my discount code “ROPerin17” to save 10%. This is the best way for me to share the love (fret not, its not an affiliate code)! The code is valid till March 2017.

As always, I share honestly about what works and doesn’t. I may have received these 3 products as goodies but I believe the outcome speaks for itself. Organic makeup is slowly but surely making its mark in the beauty industry and I am glad to have discovered Reflections Organics – local pride indeed.
